On the
Run
We've chased down six
designers we can't wait to see
at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week
New York Fall 2010
YOOX.COM
Whether you live in New York, Los Angeles, or in Lincoln, Nebraska, every self-appointed fashionista wants to be at Mercedes Benz Fashion
Week New York (MBFW) to see the greatest fashion spectacle of the year and your friends here at Fashion Q&A are lucky enough to be a part of
it. As much as we’d like to travel through time in order to see every single show of the hundreds that will be on display, we simply can’t do so.
So, we have to go with what really tickles our haute little fancies. Below are the six collections we are thrilled to see next month in February, for
whatever reason it may be. Whether it’s an artist’s return to Bryant Park after a location sojourn or just to check out the hot new talent, these are
the collections that we expect to enthrall us. Without further ado, here are Fashion Q&A’s must-see shows for MBFW New York fall/winter 2010.

ARISE
African Fashion
Collective show is an
exuberant runway
experience of talent
across all of Africa.
America’s certainly
been missing out on a
good thing, but luckily
ARISE is back this year
with a brand new line-
up from Africa’s most
promising talent in the
industry. We can only
imagine what ARISE
Magazine’s show has
in store for us now that
they’ve got the
experience under its
collective belt.
There are few fashion
designers out there that get
women as vehemently as
Diane von Furstenberg
(DVF). Despite the
recession women will
charge it for DVF, no matter
what. I’ve seen it happen
many, many times. It must
come down to Furstenberg’
s ecumenical aesthetic. It’s
hard to hate on the design
genius of DVF, for collection
after collection, she makes
femininity just so much fun.
No one in the business
understands textile
patterns, the use of color
and the female form quite
like DVF. It has nothing to
do with a return to form;
some supposed expected
spectacle, or a change in
location, or anything of the
sort. We’re excited for the
sheer love of it.
The show that turned TV
viewers into sedentary fashion
editors is back in New York for
its 7th season. By now almost
everyone knows the stakes and
the rewards that goes with
winning
Project Runway. Every
season three final contestants
vie for the $100.000 prize to help
them start their own line, but for
those at Bryant Park it’s a bit of
a guessing game, since more
than three participants almost
always show their collections in
order to mask who the real final
three contestants actually are.
But the true reward, for us at
least, is seeing bright, new
talent show what they’re made
of and no matter what goes
down the runway, EVERYONE
has an opinion, whether you’re
at the tents or sitting at home on
your sofa. With each passing
season, the finalists’ respective
collections have been getting
stronger and stronger and we’re
really hoping that this season
totally knocks us off our seats.
Catherine Malandrino has to
be New York’s favorite
import. She hails from
France, but there’s no doubt,
she’s a New York designer.
The crinoline queen is
departing her beloved
Chelsea Museum and
Ballroom and is making her
way to the tents of Bryant
Park. Why is Malandrino one
to look out for? Well, it’s very
simple. She takes femininity
to an even hyperbolic level -
you can see one of her
pieces from a mile away and
know it’s a Malandrino and
her crenellated Grecian
goddess motifs seem to
adapt new forms every
season without getting stale.
The magic is in the details
almost certainly always pulls
out the big guns with her
highly crafty touches. We’re
pleased she will be part of
the historic last season at
Bryant Park. It can only mean
Malandrino has a major wow
factor of a collection in store
for her avid followers, buyers
and press.

The Ecco Domani Fashion
Foundation (EDFF), in
affiliation with Ecco Domani
Wines was created in 2002
as a way of supporting the
best up and coming
designers that no one has
really heard of before. Ecco
Domani means “here’s
tomorrow” and that’s exactly
what they’ve been serving up
for the past eight years. Each
EDFF designer is granted
$25,000 to help them put a
runway show together for
New York Fashion Week.
Considering the alumni: Zac
Posen, Derek Lam, Rodarte,
Proenza Schouler, Thakoon
and Rag & Bone – wanting to
get a seat at what is probably
fashion’s most keen talent
scouting event (yes, even
moreso than Project
Runway), it’s a no brainer
why Ecco Domani is at the
top of our list. We could be
seeing the next Zac Posen
making his major Fashion
Week debut next month. It’s
a hard show to pass up.
New York’s most
notably “romantic”
designer,
Vera Wang,
is back at the tents
after taking her
collections down to
her Soho space last
season. Well, our
figure-skating,
wedding-making,
show-stopping lady of
tulle is back and there
must be a good
reason for it.  Truth be
told, it’s not New York
Fashion Week without
Wang. She’s a New
York staple, like the
Empire State Building,
like Bryant Park itself.
We’re going because
it’s our duty.
