The Hauteness
of Hannah
UK's Latest Design Star, Hannah Marshall
Goes Rouge for Fall 2009
By Alexander Patiño
Hannah Marshall is one of those new
designers that refuse to be left on the critical
wayside. What the UK’s new fashion
'wunderkind' has done with her line is
nothing short of a reinvigoration of
hauteness that had been long gone in the
collective fashion mind for some time now.

Marshall’s work seems borne from the
creative plasma of Helmut Newton/Yves
Saint Laurent at their height, reworked into
the space-age stylings that have come to
define the latter-end of the nineties. Power,
strength and armor are the dominant
leitmotifs of Marshall’s monochromatic fall
collection, with some pieces donning
names such as “Bat Dress,” “Armour
Dress,” and “Exoskeleton Dress.”  The
names are barely necessary, since her
vision is so easily communicated in every
garment of the intimate, yet powerful line-up
she has served up for the season. Marshall
undoubtedly works to serve the woman who
is not to be reckoned with.

The newly reworked “strong shoulder,” the
sharp lines, corseted bodices, yet played
against the dreamy silhouettes of yore make
for a very strong collection that has the guts
to touch the “iconic” and make it its own.
