Cynthia Rowley Fall 2009: A Kaleidoscopic of Color
In the midst of global downtrodden economics, it seems Cynthia Rowley has jumped on the ‘chic asceticism’ wagon for her fall collection. But that’s not to say that Rowley’s line-up leaves something to be desired. On the contrary – this is the most playfully artisanal of Rowley’s collections to date. In a season where most designers have played it safe, supported by dull monochromatic palettes, Rowley seems to have gone to the opposite side of the spectrum and produced a kaleidoscopic collection brewed in silky neons, patchworked dresses, crystallized hand-stitched leg wear and accessories galore. Her utilization of floral fabrics felt anything but dowdy. Floral tends to be saccharine and all-too springtime, but here Rowley manages to make a gorgeous autumnal symbiosis of her edgy cuts and bucolic silhouettes. Above all she must be praised for her use of color in her patchwork, which seems to come straight out of a modernized Gustav Klimt painting. This collection is a sparkling, gothic dream and it’s a welcome respite from the many other collections this season that seem to all be doppelgangers of each other. Rowley’s fall collection stands out in the best way possible.
