Giorgio Armani lends his signature style to director Joe Wright's "Hanna," outfitting Academy Award winner Cate Blanchett in a select wardrobe for her pivotal role in the boldly original
adventure-thriller, filmed on location in Europe and Morocco.
The character Hanna, played by Academy Award nominee Saoirse Ronan of Atonement, a teenage girl, who has the strength, the stamina, and the smarts of a soldier; these come from
being raised by her father (Eric Bana), an ex-CIA man, in the wilds of Finland. Living a life unlike any other teenager, her upbringing and training have been one and the same, all geared to
making her the perfect assassin. The turning point in her adolescence is a sharp one; sent into the world by her father on a mission, Hanna journeys stealthily across Europe eluding
intelligence operatives like Marissa Wiegler (Blanchett), who is eager to capture her.
"Joe [Wright] [had] a vision of Marissa [looking like a] wicked witch [which] meant that her colors would be red [for her hair] and green [in her attire]," says "Hanna" costume designer Lucie
Bates.
Armani worked with Bates to create selected looks that personified Blanchett's character. The resulting silhouettes include elegantly tailored suiting and a striking green-colored cashmere
overcoat. "Working with Cate Blanchett, on and off the screen, has always been a highlight for me," notes Armani. "She embodies the perfect combination of consummate actor and
world-class fashion icon.”
Armani has been on the forefront of creating wardrobes for major motion pictures since he pioneered the movement by dressing Richard Gere in "American Gigolo" in 1980. Since then,
many films have incorporated designs by Armani, including "Shaft," "Primal Fear," "The Untouchables," "Gattaca," "Stealing Beauty," "Double Jeopardy," "The Tuxedo," "De-Lovely,"
"A Good Year," "Ocean's Thirteen," and "The Dark Knight."
"Hanna" is currently open in theaters nationwide.
