Trends to Try for
Fall/Winter 2010
By Qianna Smith
A rich color palette will be a very necessary trend for fall. From the runway shows of Rachel Roy to Tracy Reese, one of the most pervading colors this season were shades of ginger,
camel and butterscotch juxtaposed against neutral warm or cool colors like black, teal and grey.
Tailored tweed is on my must-have style radar for fall. I saw an amazing mohair tweed suit
on the runway of Ruffian that made a sharp yet individual statement. I also adored the long tweed skirts Louis Vuitton sent down the catwalk which were ideal for the corporate stylista. You
may also want to consider pairing a pencil tweed skirt or trouser pants with a cropped fitted leather jacket to give this classic fabric some edgier appeal.

TWEED
Leopard and cheetah print remain on the
forefront of fashion because of the prints’
versatility to be worn delicately or boldly. The
print works well in a variety of colors, keeping it
fresh and modern for women of all age
groups. From belts to bags to boots,
designers such as Rebecca Taylor and 3.1 for
Phillip Lim went into feline frenzy for fall. Blugirl
went as far as sending head-to-toe leopard
print looks down the catwalk. And it worked,
because whether it’s an accent accessory or a
full-on statement, there was a leopard piece
that appealed to a wide range of women
thanks to the many styling options.

When it comes to exotic animal prints less is
always more, so be sure to wear only one
powerful piece at a time for a uniquely exotic
fashion statement. If you can’t splurge on the
real deal, you’ll definitely be able to snag a fab
faux find. I suggest donning subtle
accessories like a leopard-print bangle, belt or
shoes. If your style is understated, this is a
very chic option to try without going overboard.
You can choose to wear one bangle or stack
them up on your wrist.  Add texture and
dimension to a solid color blouse and
cardigan when you pair it over a leopard
printed belt. Try rocking a spotted pump or
leopard faux trim bootie.

THINGS
My jewelry philosophy is, go big or go home. Oversized necklaces,
bracelets and cocktail rings will always be in style. There was an
ethnic-luxe vibe in the jewelry pieces I seen on the catwalk for fall and
that’s partly because animal prints, exotic skins, furs and feathers are
so “in” this season. Take a cue from designer Naeem Khan, who
adorned models with layered jewels in divinely bold motifs. Brands
like J. Crew, Talbots and IMAN Global Chic for Home Shopping
Network have changed the game regarding statement jewelry by
creating delectable designs that look luxe without the costly price tag.

Feathers flounced on the runways of Jason Wu, “Project Runway” winner Irina Shabayeva and Alice & Olivia. This flirty and fun
texture can easily be incorporated into your fall wardrobe. Whether it’s subtly donning a feather barrette in your hair, rocking a feather-trimmed dress or going all-out glam with a full feather-
embellished skirt, you have total control of how much flight you want to take with this trend.

You’ll want to flaunt some fur for fall. Designers such as Zac Posen, Moschino and Custo Barcelona went for a
youthful kind of luxury, dipping plush
fur and faux coats in eye-popping hues that every twenty-ten fashionista
needs in her style arsenal. This look works well with skinny jeans and booties for a casually chic statement, or
belt the coat with a simple black sheath dress and tights for a more sophisticated twist.
Although summer may have come and gone, don’t pack away your pretty prints just yet. Geometric-and abstract-printed dresses flowed freely on the runways of Carlos Miele, Isaac Mizrahi
and Tib. There’s a confident spirit within the bold colors and patterns of these dresses that allows a woman to express her sensuality even in the colder months.
