Commuun Give Their Distinctive Stamp On Sportswear for Fall/Winter 2011
Sportswear was a major influence for Kaito Hori and Iku Furudate last season and it was certainly still playing on their minds for fall/winter 2011. Yet this time around Commuun’s collection was a little more glamorous and alluring thanks to a clever use of luxe fabrics and a playful balance of the transparent and the opaque.
The collection began as a study in monochrome, set off by the designers’ sparing use of patent leather and a kind of ribbed faux fur. Commuun’s knee length skirts were particularly successful, transforming from opaque to transparent mid-thigh and lending each look a strong sense of movement. The brand’s take on the classic sports jumper was perhaps more wearable - the softly rounded shoulders and cropped elbow length providing an unexpected elegance. Also unexpected was the sudden pop of azure blue which cut through the collection. It was a skillful use of color, particularly when experimented within its transparent form on long, flimsy skirts.
For the less adventurous, Commuun produced some seriously covetable winter coats that spoke more of board room than locker room. The black coat with textured inserts and long slouchy cream blazer with a black collar and cuff trim were particularly notable. What’s more Hori and Furudate gave us proof that the experimental can still be sexy thanks to a series of flirty sleeveless tops and cocktail dresses, both of which made use of the most utilitarian of frills to add a feminine softness to the pieces. An unabashed use of colour- azure blue again followed by sea green, mustard yellow and tomato red heralded the end of the collection. A perfectly proportioned sleeveless white top with neat stripes of color and slim fitting azure pants was Commuun’s way of telling us that the avant-garde can still be fun.
