Jeremy Scott makes like a 90s club kid and indulges in a little fashion D.I.Y. (Do It Yourself)

Last season Jeremy Scott gave us tops that closely resembled delicatessen bags. For Fall/Winter 2011 he’s gone one better and moved onto plastic.
An important part of Scott’s aesthetic has always been that it doesn’t take a ton of money to look stylish or make a fashion statement. His latest collection
certainly adheres to that belief, centering on the lifestyle of 90s club kids (Scott was one of them) and their D.I.Y. approach to dressing up and making fun,
provocative fashion statements.

The majority of Scott’s output this season focused on mini dresses and skirts, made even more daring by their saccharine pastel shades, twisted logos
(Scott had replaced Coca Cola’s iconic slogan with ‘Enjoy GOD’) and neon fur accents. Referencing cult 90s filmmaker
Gregg Araki and the
Wizard of Oz, the collection was more about being the most outlandishly dressed kid in town rather than a strongly mapped out, coherent fashion story.
It’s a trope we’ve come to expect from Scott and he’s not worse off for it. His tongue-in-cheek, careless attitude to fashion provides deliciously whimsical
respite in fashion week’s back-to-back schedule.  Most of the pieces are club appropriate only - take for example Scott’s version of the
Superman
costume, a full length royal blue sequined gown complete with red cape or a mini plastic trench that brings new meaning to the term flasher mac.

Yet, there were some more practical offerings. Snug shearling jackets to keep you warm in the club queue, furry looking angora sweaters and a cosy
looking turtleneck dress and cardigan combo- albeit emblazoned with a photographic pill print.  Judging by the faux fox fur stoles in neon red, yellow and
orange, Scott’s club kids wouldn’t flinch about taking a pair of scissors to Grandma’s heirloom mink coat. Sequinned mini dresses with huge acid hued
fur hems and fur shrugs were all part of the label’s cheeky take on evening elegance- right down to the fuzzy pink platforms. Accessories were kept
minimal aside from cute mini metallic and sugary shade backpacks, big enough to hold the coolest ‘zine while Scott’s revellers track down the latest hush
hush rave. Instead the models’ hair did the talking, Girl Power bunches complete with neon stripes and brashly colorful makeup to boot. Forget about the
Wizard of Oz, Jeremy Scott is the Wizard of NY.
