Most of the world’s best
recognized black models were
first discovered in remote cities,
in places where combating
hunger, not fashion faux pas, are
main topics of discussion. Two of
the highest paid black models
fitting this description are
Somalian beauty Iman,
discovered in the 70s, and
Sudanese refugee Alek Wek,
discovered in the 90s. But in the
twenty-first century, traveling to
remote lands to discover hidden
ethnic beauty treasures is no
longer the main approach for a
model scout to find new talent.
With top modeling agencies
offering internet photo
submission contests and with
reality television shows like the
CW’s “America's Next Top Model”
(ANTM), women who think they
have catwalk potential need only
to apply, audition and get
selected to become the next fresh
face of the fashion industry. As
easy as it sounds, you must be
born with looks that kill,
skyscraper height, and come in a
minuscule size. One woman who
fits these criteria is Eugena
Washington. Eugena beat out
thousands of women who dream
of becoming a top model.
Just two years ago, Eugena was
simply your average California
girl, residing in Palmdale,
working at Victoria's Secret and
trying to keep up with her eight
siblings. But then she tried out for
ANTM, and got her launch into
instant fame as a contestant and
top 3 finalist of the Season 7
show, which aired from
September 20, 2006 until
December 6, 2006.
