Digvijay Singh
Digvijay Singh’s S/S 09 collection at Lakme Fashion Week, called “Morning Mandi”,
was a stylish blend of east means west, giving traditional menswear a modern
touch. The fabrics were ideal for the season: high quality pure cotton that will make
the garments a delight to wear in the hot summer heat. Cuts and fits were lean and
structured, drawn from rustic regions of India like Gujarat and Rajasthan. The kurtas,
shirts, tunics, churidars and pants had discreet detailing which reflected the high
standard of tailoring. The styling throughout the show was innovative, yet classic, with
bits of colour added to compliment the neutral palette. “Morning Mandi” was a simply
styled menswear line, ideal for sophisticated men who want to make classic fusion
fashion statements. The sash belts pictured right will be a must-have trend for Spring.

Troy Costa
Troy Costa’s S/S 09 menswear collection, called “Sports Couture”, featured garments with an easy,
comfortable style direction. Shades of grey, white and black proliferated throughout, with jersey proving
to be a favourite fabric for sweaters and pants. Troy also worked with silk denim and gabardine, satin
cotton, poplin, jersey and silk rayon, achieving details with zips, studs, and buckles for a collection that
was very structured and form-fitting. Eye-catching outfits included a sharply-cut, structured beige jacket,
multi-pocket grey blouson, zipper up grey sweater and a Jodhpuri jacket with hidden pockets and skinny
pants. The overall look spelt elegance and style for men who want to dress in the latest trends, without
overdoing embellishments. Troy Costa’s “Sports Couture” will take the busy Indian man on a sartorial
trip with great ease – straight from the office to a night of club hopping.

Dev R Nil
Dev R Nil’s S/S 09 menswear collection, called “The Jigsaw”, was aimed at the
international male. The colour palette of the collection was extremely varied,
ranging from the usual black and white with gray, to more vivid, yet still subdued
hues of sap green, pink, blue and mauve, all integrated perfectly so as not to jar
the designs. Dev R Nil created subtle textures along with batik printing to achieve
the unusual jigsaw patterns from which the collection derives its name. The
garments included jackets, pleated trousers, slim pants, shorts, shirts and tees,
which all came together to create a comprehensive menswear wardrobe.
Highlights included a taupe hounds tooth jumper with the cube print stretch satin
shirt, and a brown lurex pleated waistcoat. “The Jigsaw” was a very interesting
and unusual menswear line – not too avant-garde, yet with enough styling
direction to make the wearer stand out.

Anuj Sharma
Expect the unexpected from Anuj Sharma. He continues to surprise, and this season’
s "Knot for You" collection revolved around strategically placed knots that bound,
shaped, draped and constructed the fabrics for the outfits. Using the perfect material
- just crepe and georgette - for his theme and selecting the muted colors of brown,
nude and grey, Anuj knotted the fabric to create versions of flowers which were held
together by slim black ribbons. Layered draped and folded the sheer fabrics proved
perfect for Anuj's designs. Graceful, ethereal and almost Grecian in their appearance,
the knee length georgette nude dress and long maxi with draped hemline were high-
impact looks. Flowing, airy and perfect for summer, the collection which Anuj Sharma
has declared is "Knot for You" but this will still make women rush for it!

Agnimitra Paul
"The Black Lily" collection by Agnimitra Paul for Spring/Summer 2009 at Lakme
Fashion Week was a tribute to those who see the world as it feels. Visualized in net,
chiffon, georgette and linen, the men's and women's wear lines were delicately
embellished with bead and thread embroidery which featured the Braille script on the
front of the dresses while the alphabets and numbers were on the lilies worked on
the back. There were ruffled lace necklines for halters, one shoulder knee length
dresses, shoulder drapes, a mix of the fabrics for skirts, maxis and slim tunics in
pink, green and red. Men's wear included casual trousers and cropped shirts in linen
with black and white color blocking. The three saris in net were lavishly embroidered
with the lilies appearing in clusters on khaki, green and black background. The idea
of mixing fabrics like net and chiffon for the sari pallavs in different colored panels
was an interesting innovation. The show stopper was Bollywood star, Neetu
Chandra, in a white georgette shimmering skirt with a black, orange, green net and
chiffon sari with beautiful embellishments. Agnimitra Paul is known to mix fashion
with a strong social message and once again she scored with her Back Lily
collection for the coming season.

Arshiya Fakih Eappen
Arshiya Fakih Eappen for her Araiya label presented a collection titled "The Journey of
a Doll into Space" – a line of garments for Spring/Summer 2009 at Lakme Fashion
Week, which were glittering cocktail minis in fabrics and drapes that were cleverly
worked into the construction. Working around an origami form of geometric and
Grecian drapes, the silhouettes were chic and almost futuristic with embellishments
playing an important role. Innovative pleating appeared on the body of the garments
with the pleats often reversed in another color. Leather was used sparingly for slim
patch work and texturing was striking on the yokes in 3D or embossed forms. The
show stoppers were popular Bollywood stars Raima Sen in a printed satin gown with
black stone embroidery and Kunal Khemu in a silver Lurex suit with cream silk shirt.
Arshiya's space and zodiac inspired collection was just ideal for cocktail evenings
and clubbing right through the coming season and was aimed at the very trendy
young fashionista who wants to keep in step with the style trends.
