We all know a few actors and actresses off stage and on screen who
consistently surprise, test and challenge audiences and fashion critics
alike. Whether it is a red carpet premiere or an accidental encounter with
the paparazzi, these celebs seem to say something striking and unusual
every time they step out. Offbeat roles, art house film projects and the
occasional mainstream success all have changed the way we look at
film--self expression, the upgraded version. These men and women
utilize the power and freedom of choice in both their body of work as well
as on their fine physiques. Brave and bold, these babes go beyond
beautiful, to bare their love of all things edgy, inventive and intense.
Johnny Depp
Ever since arriving on our television screens
in 21 Jump Street, Johnny Depp has been
making hearts skip a beat since his birth in
June of 1963. He says he chooses projects
that interest him personally. Lucky for us, he
has an amazing range of interests. As a
murdering barber in the 2007 release of
“Sweeny Todd, demon barber of fleet street,”
or as Hunter S. Thompson in 1998’s “Fear
and Loathing in Las Vegas” he is always
captivating and mysterious. Many people do
not remember Johnny in the Waters film
“Crybaby,” but it is an absolute cult classic, a
fun music treat that showcases so many of
his talents. Though known for most of his
career as a heart-throb, he is not easily put
into any one category. Any man that can be
both Willy Wonka and Jack Sparrow in the
span of only a few short years, deserves an
award for being able to morph himself
entirely. Johnny is probably best known for all
of the collaborations with writer /director Tim
Burton, he certainly has his own sense of
style. Eclectic and free spirited, he never
wears the same thing twice. Depp is a treat to
watch at any premiere for his choices always
seem to coincide with the roles that he
portrays on screen.
Dita Von Teese
“Not since Bettie Page has a
fetish model inspired such
passion as a covergirl,”
acknowledged Playboy
magazine about the diva
better known as Dita Von
Tesse. Although she is not
an actress per se, she
certainly deserves a spot on
our list as a performer who
consistently takes risks. I
mean anyone with the ability
to get their waist down to 16”
certainly deserves some
praise. Following in the
footsteps of fabulous
burlesque entertainers like
Sally Rand and Gypsy Rose
Lee, those are some mighty
shoes to fill indeed. Dita
more than holds her own on
the red carpet and onstage.

Kirsten Dunst
The darling of the acting and fashion
world shocked us all by entering
rehab this year, although she
admitted in a statement released
May of 2008, “I was in rehab for
depression,” it was a sad, sad day
for ingénue fashionistas everywhere.
Thankfully, all is right with the world,
order has been restored and the
darling is back for the upcoming flick
“ How to Lose Friends and Alienate
People,” slated for release this year.
Born in New Jersey, Kirsten got her
start at the tender age of 3 and
amassed a portfolio of over 70
commercials and advertisements.
Even more amazing was her very
seldom-remembered big screen
debut in Woody Allen’s “New York
Stories” back in 1989. After that role,
things really took off for Miss Dunst,
who at age 11, shared the screen
with both Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise in
the famous “ Interview with A
Vampire, Chronicles.” Then she took
a turn for the leading lady in 2000’s
comedy “Bring It On.” Surprising
audiences even more with her
portrayal of a lost youth in Sofia
Coppolla’s 1999’s “Virgin Suicides,”
Kirsten has always had an affinity for
fashion and I think the feeling is
mutual for fashion designers who
flock to dress her. She can be seen
most recently in the ad campaign for
MIU MIU and has also walked down
the red carpet in high-end fashion as
well as vintage numbers. Kirsten is
a quirky beauty with a keen sense for
the extraordinary.
She is so captivating that this year alone she has performed at the
famous Crazy Horse in Paris, an honor not bestowed upon anyone else,
much less any American, as well as for TAG Huer and Zac Posen, even
for a packed crowd at Cannes Film Festival yearly AmFar event. Dita has
created her own niche, in everything she does, in her style, her look, her
shows, and especially when she makes a red carpet appearance. She
certainly stole the show at the MAC Viva Glam VI event in a red Rouland
Mouret dress. Dita brings the vintage pin-up look into our century, she is
in many ways shaping the next generation of women wanting to indulge in
their femininity as well as their sense of tradition and fun. Her look is
always the same, yet never repeated. The signature red lips and beauty
mark rarely change, nor does that 16” waist, but we wouldn’t want that to
change for all the crystals that Swaroski has to offer. Dita is a constant
that is ever evolving and challenging the standards of beauty.
Marilyn Manson
Born Brian Hugh Warner in Canton
Ohio, not exactly the name and
birthplace of your average shock rocker,
reared in a good Christian home by his
father and mother, Brian was anything
but good or Christian. Today, Brian aka
Marilyn Manson, chose a name that
fused the names of beauty Marilyn
Monroe with serial killer Charles
Manson. That contradiction alone turns
heads, much less once they get a look
at the shocking style Marilyn rocks out.
Though you may not feel he belongs on
this list, he certainly has enough credits
to earn a spot. Making his big screen
debut in David Lynch’s “Lost Highway,”
Manson got a taste for the limelight.
Though far more established in the
music business, Manson is more artist
than anything else. He paints, writes,
acts and even directs. Promising
audiences that he will continue working
on his directorial debut after the end of
his tour for “eat me, drink me,” Manson
has opted to make a conventional
cinema release of his directorial debut
of “Phantasmagoria: Visions of Lewis
Carroll,” in which he directs and plays
Lewis Carroll himself. The movie
should be exciting considering the
history of both Lewis Carroll and the
enigmatic Manson. Not much needs to
be stated about his personal style. He
is in his own category, certainly much
can be observed about his current style
choices, they are more refined, more
high fashion and on general principles
all about doing the most with one’s look.
Charlize Theron
Born in Benoni, Gauteng South Africa,
Charlize is anything but ordinary. She
consistently shows up to her premieres in
edgy getups, fit for the runway. No one else
can pull off these extreme looks like
Charlize. Whether in Dior or on the beach
in a bikini, her clothes always make a
statement. On film she is captivating, never
once have we seen her in a role that she
has played before. She can be an animae
character, as in 2005’s Aeon Flux, or the
Monster, Eillene Wurnose in the 2003 film
of the same name. Recently she played
detective Emily Sanders in the film “In The
Valley of Elah.” This month she comes
back to the big screen and the red carpet in
“Hancock,” co-starring with Will Smith.
Although she consistently makes
interesting choices in both wardrobe and in
the roles she chooses, she also gives
back to her native South Africa. Working in
conjunction with Oprah’s “Angel Network”
to create funding for the widespread AIDS
epidemic, educating the youth population of
the region that is almost 50% infected and
affected by the HIV/AIDS epidemic.

Emile Hirsch
A relative newcomer to many lists and
screens worldwide, Emile has had an
intriguing resume in his thus far short
career. Born March 13, 1985, Emile grew
up in Los Angeles and Santa Fe, New
Mexico, respectively. His mother is an artist
and clearly the apple did not stray too far
from the tree. I think we all had a little
crush on Emile in 2004’s “Girl Next Door,”
co-starring the lovely Elisha Cuthbert.
Emile has already ranked the #17 spot on
Entertainment Weekly’s “30 under 30.”
Although it may not appear that he has
offered too much in way of the red carpet, I
feel that is not so, perhaps to the untrained
eye. His casual low-key style makes him
an easy target, yet he seems to take
chances with accessories and acting
choices. Even while he is making waves in
this years remake “Speed Racer,” I think
we should all go back and watch 2006’s
“Alpha Dog” as well as last years “Into the
Wild.” Emile is a rising star and we should
all start stargazing.
Lucy Liu
Born in Queens New York,
the daughter of Chinese
immigrants, Lucy Liu is more
than an accomplished
actress and style impresario.
She is an artist and a martial
arts master in “Kali-Eskrima-
Silat” a knife and stick fighting
martial art. Though educated
at The University of Michigan,
with a degree in Chinese
Language and Culture, she
isn’t your average first
generation child of immigrant
parents. Although she clearly
has strong ties to Chinese
culture, she takes risks in her
roles on screen and in her
personal life. Lucy has an
amazing physique and pulls off avant-garde looks with grace and
poise. Making her debut in 1997 on the show “Ally McBeal,” she
does not allow herself to be type-cast or pigeon holed into any
one direction. In 1999 she took a chance in “Play it to the Bone,”
a not too well received boxing saga. Again in 2000, she took a
huge risk and took on the femme fatale role in “Charlie’s Angels”
alongside Drew Barrymore and Cameron Diaz, she more than
holds her own amongst these movie mavens. Again, taking a
chance in the 2006 flick with Josh Hartnett in “Lucky Number
Slevin,” Lucy never shows up on the red carpet in something safe
or boring. Consistently taking risks seems to be the type of
ideology that a traditionalist would shun rather than embrace, but
Lucy is not your average traditionalist type of gal. She is a bold,
beautiful babe who relishes in the opportunity to give audiences
another side of herself.

could fill a resume a mile long. Making his film debut back
in 1985 in “Witness,” as an Amish farmer, may have
seemed like a stretch for any other actor, such was not the
case for Viggo. He always tackles his roles with his entire
being. Known for being private and introspective, he is able
to transform himself into seemingly anyone. He was a drill
sergeant alongside Demi Moore in 1997’s “GI JANE,”
played hired help for the Russian Mafia in 2007’s “Eastern
Promises,” and of course we cannot forget Aragon in the
“Lord of the Rings” trilogy. Although not known for his style,
he always surprises us, whether he walks down the red
carpet in a tailored suit, or shows up to a premiere in a
hockey jersey, you never know what he will be wearing or
speaking next. The man speaks Spanish, Danish and
French. Though he keeps a low profile, his look is ever
evolving and it is no wonder he is able to fly under the radar,
he changes so much we hardly recognize him.
Viggo
Mortensen
As a child,
Viggo lived in
Venezuela,
Argentina,
Denmark, and
New York.
Perhaps travel
at a young age
helped to
shape the actor
into the bold
risk-taker that
he is today. A
man well
educated with
varied interests,
his work
outside of
acting alone
